Le Sillon shipwrecked in Cornwall

Saturday evening news came of a French fishing boat damaged due to huge waves smashing through it's bridge. Brave and courageous rescue services were despatched to help. The Padstow RNLI attempted to tow the vessel but when the tow line snapped it was deemed too dangerous to attempt again. In the highly dangerous operation, the fishermen had to jump in to the sea to be rescued as the vessel was being tossed around in the rough seas. 5 crew were winched to safety by RNAS Culdrose, and the 6th rescued by the Padstow lifeboat in darkness. The crew consisting of 4 French men and 2 Portuguese are all safe, the Skipper was taken to hospital to have glass removed from his feet (ouch) and one has vowed never to go to sea again! We heard the boat had washed up at Porthcothan early Sunday morning (thanks Jo) so dashed over with the camera. Hundreds of crates were stacked up on the beach and the boat had drifted back out with the tide and was washed up around the corner off Park Head. After squelching our way through fields of thick mud on Park Head we finally got to witness Le Sillon wedged on rocks, being pounded by the waves. If like me you are curious about the history of Cornish shipwrecks, read this Daily Mail article.
